The Moonwalk (1969)
The delicious cocktail that was inspired by an epic feat of human achievement.
Joe Gilmore, head bar tender of the glamorous American Bar at The Savoy Hotel, London, created the Moonwalk cocktail in 1969.
Over 600 million people had watched the crew of the Apollo 11 land and walk on the moon that year. The mission was the culmination of several decades of investment and excitement. The promise of space exploration heavily influenced popular culture at the time. This was seen in television shows like Star Trek as well as in interior design with artists creating pod chairs and saucer like architecture that looked like something out of another popular show, The Jetsons. In the fashion world André Courrèges created the Moon Girl look: miniskirts, outsize sunglasses and calf-high, white plastic go-go boots.
For Gilmore, the expedition to the moon influenced one of his most famous signature cocktails created to both celebrate the mission and the safe return of the crew.
And soon became a part of history on its own - as well as being the most requested drink at The Savoy.
